Republican Congressman calls on Donald Trump to release his tax returns to 'clear things up'

Republican Rep. Mark Sanford (SC-01) is the first Republican in Congress to publicly call on Donald Trump to release his tax returns in light of his joint press conference with Vladmir Putin. A press conference in which the president of the United States stood before the world and rejected U.S. Intelligence assessments that the Russians interfered in U.S. elections, siding with murderous Putin over the FBI.  Everyone from former FBI Director James Comey, Hillary Clinton and former CIA Director John Brennan began proclaiming what we could all see with our own two eyes: Donald Trump appears to be bowing to Vladmir Putin, acting like a man compromised. As speculation grows that former KGB chief Vladmir Putin has kompromat (compromising information) on Donald Trump, Sanford notes that one thing Trump could do to clear his name would be to immediately release his tax returns, something Trump has promised to do on multiple occasions and is apparently hoping we’ll all forget about.  xRep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) says the president should release his tax returns in order to clear things up this week. Tells Post “I don’t know” if Russia has anything on the president and wants more answers on the president’s finances— Robert Costa (@costareports) July 17, 2018 In fact, Congress does have the power to make Donald Trump’s tax returns public. Rep. Bill Pascrell (NJ-09) asked his colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee to do just that in February 2017: Pascrell, a Democrat from Paterson who serves on the Ways and Means Committee, has asked the committee’s chairman, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, to order the Treasury Department to provide tax returns to the committee. Brady's office did not respond to a request for comment Friday. After privately examining returns -- Pascrell is seeking 10 years' worth -- the committee could decide to share them with the full House, which would in effect make them public. The 1924 law gives congressional committees that set tax policy the power to examine tax returns. It was used in 1974 when Congress looked at President Richard Nixon's returns, and in 2014 when the Ways and Means Committee released confidential tax information as part of its investigation into the Internal Revenue Service's handling of applications for nonprofit status. Twenty-three Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee blocked Pascrell’s efforts and that was the end of that.  Sanford suffered a primary defeat after criticizing Donald Trump, one of the only members of his party to take a public stance against Trump on tariffs.  In the end, Trump’s tax returns are a matter of national security. Republicans and Democrats alike should be uniting to demand Donald Trump finally fulfill his promise to release his tax returns.

Trump's performance with Putin was so bad ... that it earned praise from Rand Paul and David Duke

Donald Trump’s on-stage performance with Vladimir Putin wasn’t without some benefit. Jellyfish, slime molds, and limp dishrags around the world are feeling better about themselves after the man currently residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue vividly illustrated that neither backbone nor intellect is required to hold high office. And among the mindless organisms cheered by Trump’s performance, include this one: Donald Trump.  Arriving back in DC, Trump seems upset that he’s not getting the hero’s welcome he so deserves after a whirlwind week of destroying alliances, blowing up special relationships, and selling out the nation. And, as the Washington Post reports, he knows just where to cast the blame for the lack of cheering throngs to greet Air Force One. In a morning tweet, the president blamed the media for negative coverage of his joint news conference Monday with Putin in Helsinki — a performance by Trump that was widely panned by members of both poltical parties. “Widely panned” may be the only part of that phrase that will stick with the ratings-obsessed Trump. To date, he’s loved bad coverage … because it’s coverage. And because it gives him the chance to tee-off on his favorite “fake news” back nine. And so far Trump’s party and fans have rewarded him, no matter how egregious his action, by keeping his poll numbers amazingly robust and his backing up every moment of his shtick, even when he contradicts himself within a few hours. But while Trump’s televised capitulation to Russia isn’t generating the reaction that it should produce from his fellow Republicans, it isn’t exactly drawing huzzahs, Multiple Republicans are not exactly distancing themselves from Trump, and not exactly condemning his actions, but … edging slightly away while urging him to quickly make up with US intelligence agencies and walk back some of his buy-in to Putin’s claims. And of course, there were some who were standing by to join Trump on the Putin team. [Trump] thanked Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), one of the few prominent Republicans who have defended his performance at Monday’s remarkable 46-minute joint news conference.

America's Dumbest Congressman: Hey now, Russia has been interfering in our elections 'for 70 years'

America's Dumbest Congressman took to a House Judiciary Committee microphone today to offer up the most Dumbliest of all possible both-sides takes to Russian election interference. According to Texas Rep. Steve Gohmert, this is all normal. Terribly normal. Why if anything, it's a little suspicious we're all of a sudden trying to stop it just because they helped a Republican. “It’s been going on for 70 years,” he said. “It helped Truman get elected in ’48. Eisenhower called the Russians on it in ’56 and manipulation there.” Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev bragged about throwing the election to President John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Russia helped Jimmy Carter’s election in 1976, Gohmert said. “So I am thrilled that we are going to get help across the aisle to get to the Russian input stopped,” he said. Oh yeah well what about Harry Truman is the hot Republican take on Russian government efforts to install Donald Trump our nation was waiting for. I'm not sure even the grinding cogs of Sean Hannity's mind could think up that one. It's not quite Tucker Carlson's effort, publicly hollering that it's actually Mexico that's been tampering with our elections because Americans with Mexican heritage keep stubbornly insisting on voting even though Tucker's racist fanbase gets all a-vapored by them doing that, but it gets high marks for the suggestion that maybe Russia has been in league with Democrats all along, the sneaky bastards. Louie Gohmert has a history of repeating things he gleaned from conservative conspiracy acolytes, but this may be the last stop for Gohmert, before he ends up at his inevitable future assertion that well of course Donald Trump's campaign was actively conspiring with Russia but there's nothing wrong with that, because Freedom. You know it, I know it, we all know he'll get there, and he won’t be the only one. There ain’t no bottom there.

MGM Resorts files suit against over 1,000 victims of 2017 Las Vegas shooting

Over nine months after Stephen Paddock opened fire on a Las Vegas outdoor concert, killing 58 and wounding more than 800, over 1,000 victims of the massacre find themselves named defendants in a series of federal lawsuits. Claiming that they have the “best interest of the victims” in mind, MGM Resorts International seeks to be relieved of all liability for the attack, which was executed from two suites in MGM’s Mandalay Bay resort and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The MGM cases, filed Friday, rely heavily on the 2002 federal SAFETY Act, which was designed to combat corporate reluctance to engage in anti-terrorism efforts after the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in 2001.  Yes, companies were hesitant to try counter terrorism in their own buildings back then. Really. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the private sector was extremely reluctant to deploy security technologies and services in civilian settings due to the enormous liability risks involved. Should the company’s technology be impacted by an act of terrorism, the company could be held responsible for any damages. In response, Congress enacted the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act in 2002. MGM’s security contractor, Contemporary Services Corp., is certified by the Department of Homeland Security as “protecting against and responding to acts of mass injury and destruction.” Since Contemporary Services Corp. is protected by the SAFETY Act, the casino giant claims that those protections transfer to MGM and protect them from liability. If a judge agrees that the SAFETY Act applies, MGM asks for all liability suits to be dismissed.  MGM spokesperson Debra DeShong released a statement on Monday. “The Federal Court is an appropriate venue for these cases and provides those affected with the opportunity for a timely resolution. Years of drawn out litigation and hearings are not in the best interest of victims, the community and those still healing.” Nothing says «get well soon!» like a subpoena, am I right?

A day after Trump aligns himself with Russia over U.S. intelligence, Republicans continue to cower

Donald Trump may have aligned himself with Putin's Russia over our nation's own law enforcement officials, endorsed a Russian plan to allow Russian agents to see the evidence Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the FBI have assembled against him and to allow the Putin government to interrogate some of the regime's most hated whistleblowers, and generally humiliated himself and his nation in Helsinki yesterday, but that doesn't mean any of the Republicans currently attempting to distance-themselves-but-not-really from Trump are going to do anything about his surrender to Putin's whims. And the reason, says GOP strategist Mike Murphy, is because there's nothing in it for them. xI’m furious R’s are cowardly about Trump. But here is what they say in private: 1.) Trump is a disgrace. 2.) I give fiery press conf tmmrw saying that. 3.) Nothing changes, Trump remains nuts and remains POTUS. 4.) A nut beats me in next primary. So how does my pol suicide help? https://t.co/ZitCfRogHd— Mike Murphy (@murphymike) July 17, 2018 Sure, Trump may be making noises about sharing secrets of the Russian espionage investigation with the Russian spies who did it, but what's really important here is maintaining my wee little fiefdom of political power. Of course.

Kansas congregations pledge to shield immigrants facing deportation, 'even if it means arrest'

Campaign Action The sanctuary movement experienced a resurgence following the 2016 election, with about 1,000 houses of worship nationwide calling for “holy resistance” to mass deportation policies and pledging to shelter immigrants who face being torn from their families and homes.  Now, two Kansas congregations, Shalom Mennonite Church and First Mennonite Church of Christian, have become the latest houses of worship to join their ranks—even if it means the possibility of church leaders facing persecution and arrest.  “In my upbringing,” said Ben Woodward-Breckbill, associate pastor at Shalom, “I was taught to value this idea that sometimes the church should be a witness to something that can be against a law.” For congregations, it’s personal. Shalom “voted to become a sanctuary congregation after several years of engaging with the Hispanic community in the area,” including being asked by the pastor of a Latino church if Shalom could help protect a woman who had been arrested and was facing deportation.  Unfortunately, before anything could happen, the woman “ended up being deported and left behind her children who are American citizens.” Rev. Rachel Ringenberg Miller said that “had she had space and time, perhaps she would have been here.” Now both churches, spurred by this national crisis, are set to “undergo renovations to create apartment-style spaces where an immigrant or immigrant family could live.” “In the story of the Good Samaritan,” said Rev. Laura Neufeld Goerzen of First Mennonite, “Jesus makes it pretty clear that our neighbor is anyone who happens to be in need regardless of their race or nationality. Designating our place as a place of sanctuary felt like a natural outgrowth of our mission.”

Undercover report shows the Facebook moderation sausage being made

An undercover reporter with the UK's Channel 4 visited a content moderation outsourcing firm in Dublin and came away rather discouraged at what they saw: queues of flagged content waiting, videos of kids fighting staying online, orders from above not to take action on underage users. It sounds bad, but the truth is there are pretty good reasons for most of it and in the end the report comes off as rather naive.
