Responding to its astounding success in a very short span of time in the Asian region, Phillips will inaugurate its first gallery space in Asia at the St George’s Building in Central, Hong Kong, on March 26, 2018.Located in the same building’s 14th floor where the auction house recently relocated its Asia headquarters, the gallery space will be a cutting-edge destination for global art connoisseurs with Phillips’ proposed calendar encompassing several exhibitions, auction previews, private sales, cultural programs and other special events, which aims to augment a seamless communication between the auction house’s clients and partners. The auction house has seen buoyant growth in its business in this region since its inaugural Hong Kong sale in November 2015 — as the number of Asian buyers in Phillips’ auctions across the globe increased by 133 percent. From 2016 to 2017 itself, its total sales in Asia saw a growth of 13 percent and it continued to add to its client base in the continent. This growth is believed to be instrumental in the company’s deeper move into Asia with this new gallery space. The CEO, Edward Dolman, pointed out, “Phillips’ consistent trajectory of growth in Asia since our inaugural sale in Hong Kong in 2015 consolidates our position as a key player in this important and dynamic market in just less than three years. The expanded headquarters in Hong Kong is an important addition to our business, along with our headquarters in London and New York. Such exponential growth reflects the continued increase in demand and appreciation for art and culture across the region, affording Phillips the opportunity to further invest in our business here.”To commemorate the inauguration of this new Asia gallery, the company will host a cross-category selling exhibition, “Hong Kong. Spotlight. Now,” on view at the new venue from March 26 through April 13, 2018, showcasing works by artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Keith Haring and Peter Doig. Alongside bringing these international artists together, the show will also present exceptional works of design, photographs, watches and jewels, and display the highlights from Phillips’ forthcoming Geneva and Hong Kong watch auctions at the same occasion.
