A bill to strengthen the federal gun background check system has bipartisan support in Congress. It has Donald Trump’s support. It’s being blocked in the Senate by Colorado’s Cory Gardner. There are a couple interesting things about Gardner. First, he’s the chair of the National Republican Senate Committee—i.e. he’s the guy in charge of getting Republicans elected to the Senate. Second, he is the fifth-highest recipient of National Rifle Association money in the U.S. Senate, to the tune of nearly $4 million. Each of those things tells you something, and together, they tell you a lot, not just about Gardner but about the Republican Party. So why has Gardner put a hold on the bipartisan Fix NICS bill? When questioned on “Face the Nation,” Gardner said, “I think there are some of us who are talking about due process issues in the bill … it’s a question of Constitutional rights and protecting the people.” But Gardner is lying. All the Fix NICS bill does is audit federal agencies to verify they are sending all the data to the gun background check system they are already legally required to. The idea is to reduce incidences such as the Sutherland Springs church shooter being allowed to buy a gun because the Air Force did not enter his bad-conduct discharge into the federal system. Got that? The “due process” issue Gardner is concerned about is having the government fix the patches in its existing enforcement to be sure that people who should fail background checks do fail background checks. They’ve already gotten their due process. This is about having the results of that due process entered into a database. And this is who Republicans have put in charge of their 2018 Senate prospects.
