Top Democrat seeks info on Kushner, Ivanka using personal email accounts for official work

House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings raised concerns Thursday that several White House officials, including Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, had violated federal records law and jeopardized national security by using personal email accounts for official business and failing to properly document their communications. In a letter to White House counsel Pat Cipollone, Cummings wrote that Kushner's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, told him and former Oversight Chair Trey Gowdy last December that both Kushner and Ivanka had been using personal email for official business. Kushner had also been utilizing the encrypted messaging service WhatsApp to interact with foreign counterparts, raising questions about whether he had been recording those interactions. «For example during a meeting with Mr. Kushner's attorney, Abbe Lowell, Mr. Lowell confirmed that Mr. Kushner has been using the messaging application WhatsApp as part of his official White House duties to communicate with foreign leaders,» Cummings wrote to Cipollone. «Mr. Lowell could not answer whether Mr. Kushner's communications included classified information—which would be a major security breach—but instead directed the Committee to inquire with the National Security Council and the White House.» Cummings also said Lowell argued that Kushner was supposedly documenting his communications through WhatsApp by taking screenshots of them and forwarding them to his official White House email account or the National Security Council. Not officially documenting such communications undertaken in an official capacity is a violation of the Presidential Records Act. Cummings’ letter also asserted that Lowell told them Ivanka was using personal email for official business but failing to forward some of those emails to her official White House account unless she replied to them. Lowell quickly responded with a lawyerly parsing of Cummings' characterization of what was said during that December meeting, calling it «not completely accurate.» Lowell maintained that he hadn't exactly said Kushner was communicating in this manner with foreign «leaders» or «officials,» but rather he has used them with «'some people' and I did not specify who they were.»

Fox ponders whether Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a 'Manchurian candidate' because reasons

For those of you just joining us, Fox News morning show Fox & Friends is the lead paint of «news.» Donald Trump's favorite key-rattling executive time program has for years been making viewers stupider, one segment at a time. Here they are expressing sincere concern over the very well-crafted questions Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been peppering witnesses with during House committee hearings, questions considerably above the grade of the usual posturing, harrumphing congressional bluster: HOST WHO ISN'T STEVE DOOCY: Somebody's writing her questions. I saw the questions at Michael Cohen and saw the questions at Wilbur Ross. And there are some forces behind her, I think there's a story there. FAILED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TURNED ARTISANAL TWEET-CRAFTER MIKE HUCKABEE: Well there very well could be. There have been some allegations she was almost like the Manchurian Candidate. Recruited, prepared. You know, I don't know. This is an exquisite Fox News interaction, a perfect little eclair of conservative distrust for, ya know, the competent and the book learners of the nation. This congressperson whom we are absolutely obsessed over for unclear reasons is suspiciously smart, says one of the co-hosts of America's dumbest news program. It may indeed be a conspiracy, says the day's chosen buffoon of the moment. Somebody must be behind this suspicious ability to ask non-stupid questions. We could mock the absolute obsession the Fox News right has with Ocasio-Cortez, who the network has decided will be a major focus of their latest attempts to send Fox News's audience of shut-ins and tinfoil enthusiasts into spasms of pants-wetting terror. But it's the particular accusation here that's more instructive. By God, they get twitchy when someone in a position of power seems to take their job seriously. Trump's bizarre, grievance-infused speeches get effervescent praise from Fox hosts, when he goes off on his usual inexplicable tangents and spouts demonstrably false nonsense. Asking serious questions of Michael Cohen or Wilbur Ross, though ... what devilry is this? And that is why Fox & Friends is the lead paint of news. Don't watch it, kids. Don't lick that particular windowsill.

Marine commandant: Trump's troop deployment to border poses 'unacceptable risk' to combat readiness

It’s been clear since day one that Donald Trump’s declaration of a “national emergency” was nothing more than a chunk of red meat to appease his rabid and racist base. And on Thursday, via two leaked memos obtained by the Los Angeles Times, we learn that Marine Corps Gen. Robert Neller warned the Pentagon that Trump’s troop deployment to the U.S.-Mexican border, and the transferring of funds to pay for it, has created an “unacceptable risk to Marine Corps combat readiness and solvency.” Neller also notes that it has “forced him to cancel or reduce planned military training in at least five countries, and delay urgent repairs at bases.” So, Trump’s wall obsession is not only racist, and a waste of money, but it’s now putting military lives at risk.

Trump pal Roger Stone invokes Fifth Amendment, declining to cooperate with House Judiciary

Donald Trump's White House has stonewalled congressional oversight at every turn, and it should perhaps come as no surprise that longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone invoked his Fifth Amendment rights Thursday in refusing to cooperate with a House Judiciary Committee query. «Mr. Stone respectfully declines to produce any documents, and declines any potential invitation for an interview which may follow,» Stone lawyer Grant Smith wrote to Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler in a letter dated March 18. The Judiciary panel had sought documents from Stone related to Trump’s hush money payment scheme, any offers made by foreign governments to Trump or his business, and any communications with WikiLeaks and the Russian government involving Trump. Apparently those were topics on which Stone wasn't keen to share. Stone's lawyer referenced his client's criminal indictment by special counsel Robert Mueller as a reason to defer cooperation «until the charges are resolved.» But Smith went a step further, accusing the panel of engaging in a partisan «fishing expedition» as retribution for losing the 2016 presidential election. «Neither will Mr. Stone confirm for your Committee the existence of, or produce any documents requested, for the purpose of being used against him in anyway or to further the political agenda of people who want nothing more than to avenge the loss of their chosen candidate for president in 2016 by deposing the legally elected office holder,» he wrote. Smith also included a lot of gauzy language about the Fifth Amendment protecting «innocent men ... who otherwise might be ensnared by ambiguous circumstances.» Poor Stone, just a great guy caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Could have happened to any guy with a back tattoo of Richard Nixon. Of course, you know what Donald Trump always wondered about people who take the Fifth: “If you're innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?” Trump would know: He took the Fifth himself in 1990 during his acrimonious split from his first wife, Ivana Trump, avoiding some 97 questions, mostly about adultery.
