In January of 2014, Arizona restaurant owner Bret Frimmel and manager Lisa Norton were arrested by law enforcement from Maricopa County Sheriff’s office on employment-related identity theft charges. Those charges were thrown out of court after a judge found that then-Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s underlings had “recklessly disregarded the truth in affidavits used to get search warrants and ultimately found that there was no probable cause to back up the warrants.” On Wednesday, Maricopa County officials approved a settlement that will give Uncle Sam’s owner Frimmel $5 million and conclude his civil lawsuit against the County and Arpaio. Uncle Sam’s manager Lisa Norton received $400,000 in a separate settlement of her lawsuit a few weeks ago. The breakdown of the settlement: $3.1 million will come out of the Maricopa County coffers, with the rest covered by insurers. According to the Associated Press, these are a couple of the last civil cases pending against Arpaio. Read more
