With the 2020 election finally in the history books, you’ve probably already seen your fair share of county-level maps, whether it’s just the standard red/blue map of results or maps of each county’s swing from 2016. We’re offering a totally different perspective: a map showing the last time each county was won in a presidential election by a Democratic candidate, and a corresponding map showing the same thing except for Republican victories. This subtle approach gives you a broad sense of the historical trends in different parts of the nation. In addition to, of course, the places where Democrats are currently strong, you can see the medium-colored places that we’re talking about when we discuss “ancestrally” or “historically Democratic” regions—places like the rural Upper Midwest, where Democrats regularly won until recently, or like most of Appalachia, where Democrats won until the 1990s or 2000s. You can also differentiate the places that have never been “ancestrally” Democratic at all, especially across the Great Plains states. Read more
