A San Francisco Bay Area-based hip hop educational organization is fighting to stay afloat financially after local shelter-in-place orders forced the suspension of in-person operations. Hip Hop for Change is an educational nonprofit that teaches activism and self-expression to thousands of students through hip hop music, breakdancing, and graffiti art. Now with the global pandemic confining students to their homes, Hip Hop for Change has lost all of its school contracts, been forced to cancel its upcoming shows, and has had to furlough its entire grassroots staff. Its founder and executive director, Khafre Jay, is now searching for creative ways to continue to spread the organization’s message while waiting out the crisis. Read more
