The French Senate has passed a bill, stating that the Notre-Dame Cathedral must be restored in the way it was before the fire. This comes after a number of opinions and speculation over how the cathedral must be rebuilt, following last month’s catastrophe that destroyed its roof and spire, reports dezeen.According to the French newspaper Le Monde, “the restoration bill states that the reconstruction must create a cathedral that is faithful to the ‘last known visual state’ of the building. It also says that the restoration must recreate Eugene Viollet-le-Duc’s spire and that any use of new materials will need to be justified.”The subject of the rebuilding of the cathedral has become a fraught debate between traditionalists wanting an exact restoration and others opting for a more imaginative take. If the bill progresses in its current state, it would seem to go against what France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, and Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe said. The president earlier called for “an inventive reconstruction,” while the Prime Minister announced an international competition to design a new spire for the cathedral. “As is often the case in the evolution of heritage, we should endow Notre-Dame with a new spire,” he said to reporters. These announcements have led to numerous architects and designers coming up with inventive proposals as to how the cathedral could be rebuilt with a modern spin. Some of the suggestions include a rooftop garden, an “endless spire” of light and a swimming pool on top of the building. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
