The Vancouver-based design firm Campos Studio, in collaboration with Toronto based industrial designer Tom Chung, has renovated a traditional Vancouver house for a retired couple. Called “Yew House,” the three-story residence is situated on a large plot of land in Kitsilano, one of Vancouver’s original working-class neighborhoods. As described in the project note by Campos Studio, “Originally built in 1907, the house underwent a patchwork of renovations and in the 1970s most of its land was sold off to accommodate a neighboring development.” This prevented the design team from extending the residence, and so the updates instead focused on making the most of the existing structure and rearranging the internal layout. As described by the studio, “The plan was to upgrade the existing house by gutting it down to the studs, reinsulating and seismically upgrading the shell.” The project had been commissioned by a retired couple, who had raised their family in the house, and now wanted it to better suit the next stage of their lives. Thus, “the plan became to create a bright, modern, open-plan loft-style living area with an unobtrusive and private guest area for visiting children and friends,” states the project note. The previous attic den was converted into a master bedroom and ensuite loft with hidden storage while the ground floor bedrooms are now a self-sufficient guest area connected to the main living space through a concealed door in the kitchen millwork. The main floor was designed to be convertible to one level living by anticipating the eventual conversion of the TV room and powder room into a master bedroom so that the couple could age in place. The project note adds, “Finishes were kept hardwearing and timeless throughout. The floors, including the stairs, are in European white oak. The millwork is a combination of oak and Baltic birch. The ceiling was braced with black metal turnbuckles which echoed the black metal screens and metalwork.” The first floor was reconfigured into a large open-plan lounge, kitchen, and dining room arranged around a central staircase. During the demolition, an original fireplace was discovered hidden behind drywall by Chung and Campos Studio. It was restored and helps to define the dining and living areas, states the project note. A mix of vintage designs owned by the client, including a weathered wood dining table, and contemporary designs like hanging black pendant lamps, feature throughout the residence. There are also a number of custom-designed lights by Chung, whose previous works include a countdown clock to speed up daily tasks and a double-ended lamp. Founded in 2015, Campos Studio is an interdisciplinary design studio located in Vancouver. Steered by a compact group of individuals, the studio maintains a vast body of work — including a variety of projects in architecture, public art, branding, and product design. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
