British designer Lee Broom recently presented an exhibition of his works “Park Life,” in a car park beneath the Space Furniture showroom in Sydney. As per the designer’s official website, the exhibition was contained within a white polycarbonate box inside the raw 370-square-meter concrete space. It showcased more than 100 individual lights by the designer, along with other works. The press note of the exhibition states that by employing the urban surroundings of the location, Lee Broom had transformed the industrial car park to create a contemporary interpretation of a traditional garden park. “Taking the form of a maze, ‘Park Life’ will take guests on a poetic journey of discovery through hidden passageways, with tableaus and vignettes showcasing the brand’s lighting, furniture, and accessories in a whole new light,” described the press note. Broom said that he was inspired by 18th-century pleasure gardens as places of “escapism, amusement, and drama” when conceiving the exhibition. Reflecting these pleasure gardens, a path of white gravel lead toward the entrance of the exhibition, flanked on either side by two classical figures. One of the statues was holding Broom’s “Orion” tube light with the “Orion” globe light hanging in front of it, with the same lights hanging in a different configuration behind the other. Both figures were installed on squares of black acrylic that reflected like pools of water. Once they entered the white box, visitors had to find their way through a maze of connected rooms designed to deliberately disorientate, with mirrors and secret doors. In each space, products designed by Broom were arranged in clusters. As described by the press note, in one area, the “Lens Flair” pendant lights were installed as “chess pieces” with 16 lights in a matt black finish hanging opposite the same number in a brushed brass finish, above a “chessboard” of white gravel and stone squares. The exhibition also marked the debut of a version of Broom’s “Eclipse” light, available as a pendant, chandelier, and table lamp with a polished gold finish. Further on, a cluster of the designer’s “Fulcrum” pendants in polished gold cascade hung from the ceiling with white globes standing on plinths on either side. Elsewhere the “Split mirror” and black “fulcrum pendant” were placed above an outsized classical bust that leans in one corner, whilst the “Ring” light and two “Optical” pendant lights hung in other nooks of the maze-like space. “Park Life” forms part of a series of events that marks the brand’s continuing global expansion. As part of this expansion, Broom will also be undertaking a tour of the region for the whole month of March and present a series of presentations and Design Talks in Singapore, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and New Zealand coinciding with Singapore and Melbourne Design Weeks. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
