The Sao Paulo-based designer duo Campana Brothers will soon be featured in an exhibition titled, “Hybridism,” at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, London. The exhibition, which opens on March 22 will be on view through May 17, 2019. Describing the exhibition, the gallery says, “’Hybridism’ explores the Campana Brothers’ sculptural experimentation and their foray into the artistic realm of personal expression and societal commentary.” The exhibition’s title refers to the brothers’ opinion about themselves. As stated by the gallery, they “view themselves as hybrids,” as their creative process is driven by the diverse mix of cultures, languages, and architecture that co-exist in their home city of Sao Paulo. The exhibition will present 13 surrealist furniture objects and sculptures, called the “Noah series,” which are inspired by mythological stories. As described by the gallery, they seek to tell the biblical story of Noah’s Ark, and communicate the idea that the ark was the origin of all species. The cast bronze and aluminum pieces include a bench with a seat made from roughly woven thick strips of fabric and a frame made from bronze and aluminum creatures. The gallery describes that the seat was woven using a technique that the brothers developed with special textiles following a period of research into multidisciplinary materials and means of production. Speaking about the bench, Humberto Campana said: “It demonstrates the material mix as well as the hybrid understanding of history, leaving the observer with a surrealist aftertaste.” Other pieces featured at the exhibition include a bronze wall table that looks as if it is being supported by a mass of intertwined animals; while the Sereia Pirarucu lounge chair is made from Pirarucu leather, which is the discarded skin of a giant fish found in the Amazonian rivers and lakes. The chair’s scaly appearance and bulky anthropomorphic form is a reference to mermaid mythology. The Campana Brothers’ studio, Estudio Campana, works in partnership with local communities, factories, and industries to create pieces that celebrate the bright colors and rich textures of their native country. Adopting an environmental ethos, the brothers utilize everyday found materials, reinventing them to achieve simple solutions that do not compromise on aesthetic or design. The brothers gained international attention when they became the first Brazilian artists to exhibit their work at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1998. They are the recipients of numerous awards, including the Ordre des Arts et Lettre from the Ministry of Culture in France, and the Order of Cultural Merit in Brazil. Their designs are included in the permanent collections of renowned cultural institutions such as the MoMA in New York, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. They have also been the subject of several exhibitions including one at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in 2008. “Hybridism” is on view from March 22 through May 17, at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery, 4 Albemarle Street - W1S 4GA, London For details, visit www.carpentersworkshopgallery.com https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
