The ANNEX at M+B is currently hosting “Just Around the Bend,” a solo exhibition by artist and designer Misha Kahn, on view through March 16, 2019. “Just Around the Bend” marks the designer’s first solo exhibition at ANNEX as well as in Los Angeles. The exhibition displays, what has been described by the gallery as, “a rampant cast of character-objects” that include furniture, lighting, and sculpture. Commenting on the artist’s work, the gallery states, “Misha Kahn’s practice is grounded in contradiction. Rather than creating harmony between scale, function, and materiality, Kahn zealously opts for discord, resulting in objects with constantly evolving personalities.” Kahn’s signature style is notable in the exhibits presented at the exhibition. For instance, “Tingle Tangle Mingle Mangle,” a bronze desk with gloopy legs and extra appendages that appear to be partially melting, suggests anything but discipline and productivity; rigid bronze is molded to make any task feel ungraspable as the hours slip through the fingers. And, in case the day does decide to pass in vain, a mirror is offered to melt away in ennui, states the release. Similar fluid forms are visible in the “American Gothic” chair and “Around the Tree and into the Hole” sofa, created around plywood and steel frames, and upholstered in multi-colored cashmere. For a chandelier named “Down the Road to the Right,” the designer applied a grass-weaving technique he learned from artisans in Swaziland to produce a monstrous fixture that holds distorted blown-glass bulbs. A set of small lamps called “Le Petit Prince” look like stick figures with oversized bronze crowns, while a stainless steel table known as “Back Bend Starfish Puts on all Her Jewels for Her Workout” is covered in colored glass spots. As described by the gallery, “Endearingly absurd, each piece cunningly veils its trickery while acting out Kahn’s story of untamed design.” Misha Kahn graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Tel Aviv the following year. His work has been displayed in several exhibitions such as “20 under 20” at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; and “NYC Makers: MAD Biennial” at the Museum of Art and Design, New York. Kahn’s works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas; Corning Glass Museum, New York; and Rhode Island School of Design, Rhode Island. Misha Kahn lives and works in Brooklyn. “Just Around the Bend” is on view through March 16, 2019, at M+B, 612 North Almont Drive, Los Angeles. For details, visit https://www.mbart.com https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
