The Shanghai-based design studio 8 Hour has released a range of seating furniture, which is inspired by the “changing forms” of a paperclip. Presented at the recently concluded Design Shanghai (March 6-9, 2019), this furniture collection is titled “Clips” and features a bench and two chairs with rounded metal frames and padded seats. According to studio sources, the seating series is available in an assortment of bright or contrasting colors. As described by 8 Hour’s designer Sherry Xu, the collection takes its visual cues from the looped shape of a metal paperclip, conventionally used to hold sheets of paper together. “Our ‘Clips’ range is inspired by the changing forms of paperclips….We attempted to use our funny imaginations to create interesting senses and joviality through conflicting colors and circuitous lines,” stated Xu in an interview with dezeen. Describing the items presented in the “Clips” collection, the studio sources state that the “Clips” chair is available with either a high or low back. It has a padded, domed seat, and a metal frame that makes up both the legs and the back of the chair, which is shaped like a semi-circle. The bench features a flat, rectangular seat. The legs are formed from lengths of metal tubing soldered to the frame of the seat. “’Clips’ is an amazing item. Its shape is flexible and very identifiable,” added Xu, who is a graduate from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. 8 HOUR was set up in 2015, focusing on furniture and product design. Their designs are inspired by everyday moments and objects, and their products cater to “make the life more interesting.” The studio is based in Shanghai and hence they are influenced by the diversification and vitality of the city. People, things, and the city merge together in their designs. Apart from the “Clips” collection, 8 Hours also showcased its “Jellyfish” tables and “Mirror Mirror” pieces at the Design Shanghai fair.
