Leading House Democrats are supporting an effort to have a provision that previously allowed tens of thousands of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to travel outside of the U.S. under special circumstances restored by the Trump administration. Under “advance parole,” DACA recipients could apply for permission from the government to travel internationally in case of family emergencies, illnesses, and educational opportunities, but the process has ground to a halt under the Trump administration, as the DACA program itself remains on in peril in the courts. What’s left is truly a humanitarian tragedy. Unable to leave the U.S. for fear of not being able to return, young immigrants have to watch from afar if a relative outside the country gets sick or dies. That’s the biggest fear for sure.” Park, originally from South Korea, is a New Yorker who has called America his home since he was just 7 years old. “I haven’t really thought about what that’s going to mean if I’m not allowed back.” What DACA recipients need is permanent protections, which are supported by the vast majority of Americans. In the meantime, House Democratic leaders are calling on United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to restore advance parole for “humanitarian, labor, and educational purposes.” Read more
