Rotterdam’s home football club Feyenoord is soon going to get its new stadium, courtesy the city-based Dutch architectural firm OMA. Designed by the firm’s managing partner and architect, David Gianotten, the 63,000-seat stadium is set to become the largest football stadium in the Netherlands. According to dezeen, the stadium is proposed for a site on the Maas river and is going to replace Feyenoord’s existing stadium, De Kuip. In designer Gianotten’s words, the arena will set “a new benchmark in contemporary stadium design.” He adds, ‘’The new Feyenoord Stadium will be as iconic and intense for the supporters and players of Feyenoord, and for the Dutch national team, as the historic Stadium De Kuip has been — but now fulfilling all top-level UEFA regulations.” Reporting the finalization of the iconic new stadium’s design, OMA’s official website states that with a perfect bowl shape formed by continuous curved tiers, which are in close proximity to the pitch, the design represents “the DNA” of De Kuip. The design will enable visitors to have a sensational view onto the pitch from each seat. The design of the new stadium also includes plans for a concourse to be designed in collaboration with Lola Landscape. As described by the OMA website, the concourse will act as “a unique public space with views both into the stadium and over the river and Rotterdam’s skyline.” The idea is to create a multifunctional public space that can be used for music concerts and political congresses on non-match days. The new Feyenoord stadium is part of OMA’s Feyenoord City project, a larger urban masterplan for Rotterdam Zuid, an area just outside the city center, on the southern side of the Erasmus Bridge. As reported by dezeen, the master plan, which was approved by the Rotterdam city council in May 2017, is set to provide 255,000 square meters of housing, 64,000 square meters of commercial space, and 83,000 square meters of public amenities. It also accommodates plans to redevelop De Kuip into a mixed-use complex containing apartments, shops, and offices. Talking about the promising new project, OMA says, “OMA’s Feyenoord City masterplan aims to spark the redevelopment of Rotterdam Zuid, activate its waterfront, and reconnect this part of the city to the surrounding neighborhoods.” Led by architect Rem Koolhaas, OMA has built numerous projects in its home city of Rotterdam, including the Timmerhuis and the Kunsthal Art Gallery. OMA is all set to draw up the final plan of the stadium once Feyenoord approves the schematic plan proposed by it. The new stadium is planned to open in 2023. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
