REDBAAL, the Architecture Biennial Network of Latin America, has announced that Teopanzolco Cultural Center by Isaac Broid + PRODUCTORA has won the 2018 Oscar Niemeyer Award for Latin American Architecture.The Oscar Niemeyer Award for Latin American Architecture is a renowned initiative by the Latin American Architecture Biennial Network (REDBAAL). This award recognizes the best architectural production, unquestionable empowerment, and presence of Latin American architecture in the international context.The Oscar Niemeyer Award is given every two years to a single work of architecture previously awarded with a Gold or Silver Medal at a REDBAAL biennial.ArchDaily reports that the Oscar Niemeyer Award jury presented a list of 20 finalists. The organizers sought to highlight the best architectural production “in moments of undeniable empowerment and the presence of Latin American architecture in the international context.”The project for the new Cultural Center is located on a site across from the archeological zone of Teopanzolco, a location that proposes two fundamental strategies: on the one hand to enhance the relationship with the archeological site and on the other to generate a significant public space.The building is organized around two elements — a triangular building that contains the public programs (lobbies, services, box office, cloakroom, auditorium) and the platform surrounding it that contains the operation zones (dressing rooms, storage, workshops), including a multipurpose black box theater.The architects’ made a two-fold strategy to enhance the relationship with the archeological site and generate a significant public space.The jury for 2018 Oscar Niemeyer Award consisted of: Cesar Shundi Iwamizu (Brazil); Fabian Farfan Espinosa (Bolivia); Carla Juacaba (Brazil); Carlos Jimenez (Costa Rica); and Jean Pierre Crousse (Peru).The Teopanzolco Cultural Center won Silver Medal at the III Mexico City Architecture Biennial 2018.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
