Stiff + Trevillion’s sea green, brick clad building on Beak Street in the Soho and Chinatown Conservation Area will house the renowned British artist Damien Hirst’s Studio. The new building for Landcap and Enstar Capital is spread over 1900 sq m across four floors that will be used as office space, and also features a 477 sq m restaurant at ground and basement levels. Damien Hirst recently purchased the building and is converting it into his studio.“Fulfilling part of his requirement for high ceilings, a voluminous double height space was created by a void in the second floor slab, providing a dramatic space that runs through the centre of the building. A ‘letterbox’ opening is cut into every floor slab directly over the service corridor at the back of the building, to enable large scale artworks to be hoisted up and down the building. A high level of craftsmanship to the building’s exterior offers visual stimulation and reflects the rich artistic context of the site. Inspired by the cultural tradition that gives heightened importance to the corner of a building, a striking visual accent to the building’s corner acts as a beacon for the building. Collaborating with artist Lee Simmons, the window reveals are encased in large cast aluminium panels to give the illusion of deep relief and texture. This unique textural work feathers out around the building’s cornice to crown the glazed facade,” stated Stiff + Trevillion. The facade features darker, deep blue bricks at the base of the building, and lighter sea green in the main body, which alludes to the process of hand dipping each glazed brick.Lance Routh, Director at Stiff + Trevillion, said: “We wanted to design a building which would contribute to the vibrancy and creative appeal of Soho, whilst being sensitive to the surrounding brick architecture. The level of craftsmanship and detail in the facade, combined with the distinctive colour of the brickwork, has resulted in a unique building which we hope will be an inspiring workplace for Damien Hirst and his team.”Rakan McKinnon, Director at LandCap, commented: “Stiff + Trevillion has transformed this site to create a stunning building worthy of its historic Soho setting. Through its design-led approach the practice has created a new building which we think will be worthy of listing in the future. The commercial success of the building has reinforced our belief in the importance of investing in good design.”Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the building.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
