Donald Trump had more to say about Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh Wednesday morning, and as you’d expect, he was a lot more convincing and sincere when he was defending Kavanaugh. Trump claimed that “If she shows up and makes a credible showing, that'll be very interesting, and we'll have to make a decision. But I can only say this: he's such an outstanding man, very hard for me to imagine that anything happened.” So the bar on Ford making a credible showing is virtually unattainable, in other words. He also complained angrily that “I’ve given her a lot of time, the Senate has given her a lot of time, we continue to give her a lot of time. We’ve held up the whole hearing.” That “lot of time” has consisted of Trump refusing to have the FBI investigate and Republicans taking about 10 minutes to pretend to listen to Ford, followed by a sustained smear campaign against her. Trump did get one thing right: Sen. Dianne Feinstein mishandled this issue. But that doesn’t mean Kavanaugh should get a free pass onto the Supreme Court. “Did the nominee commit attempted rape” is one of those questions it’s worth taking a little time to properly answer—and remember, Republican moaning about how this is delaying the process comes on top of their rushing to a hearing and a vote without all of Kavanaugh’s official papers having been made public. It’s not just that Republicans don’t care about sexual assault if it’s committed by one of their own (though they don’t). It’s that they want Kavanaugh in that seat yesterday and they’re not willing to slow their push—especially for something that might disqualify him. Read more
