Hostler Burrows will present new porcelain sculptures by Babs Haenen, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, from October 10-November 9.Haenen is influenced by Abstract art, and her sculptures are expressed in a painterly fashion. In her recent series, the artist reinterprets paintings by some of the masters including Matisse and de Kooning, and renders the movement and composition of these paintings to marvelous effect. Abounding with fluid color and pattern, her sculptures echo the movement in the paintings from which they are inspired.“Babs Haenen creates evocative porcelain sculptures in which the aspects of form, line, and color bear equal weight and seem to ‘dance’ together as one whole,” writes the gallery. “Landscape motifs travel in freeform successions of contours and biomorphic waves; the sculptures brim with the movement of the natural world, recalling the vagaries of the wind, earth, water, and sky all at once.”Haenen’s work is deeply rooted in traditional Dutch ceramic art and pottery, and also draws from the Japanese and Chinese traditions. The artist reimagines the porcelain form, and challenges the decorative norms commonly associated with ceramic art. She layers slabs of porcelain with pigment to form thin sheets, which are then folded, cut, and sculpted to create organic vessels and sculptures that are alive with inner movement.“The hand building technique allows for the work as a whole to be pigmented; color does not rest superficially in an exterior glaze but has dimension and moves throughout the porcelain in sharp lines or soft washes of tone. Where a painter might deftly wield a brush, she methodically sculpts and uses molds; the movement is gradual, an unveiling of gorgeously hued clays in rhythmic patterns manipulated through multiple firings,” describes the gallery.Haenen’s newest work is a further exploration of her “Mountain” series, abstracted yet further, appearing at times as “mountain buildings” — hybrids of nature and architecture. The exhibition will be on view from October 10 to November 9, 2018, at Hostler Burrows Gallery, 35 E 10th Street, New York City.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
