Demisch Danant, New York, is featuring a group exhibition titled “Narratives.”“Narratives” features works by Jacques Dumond, Joseph-Andre Motte, Louis Sognot, Etienne Fermigier, Maria Pergay, Jean Dudon, Pierre Paulin, Jean-Paul Barray & Kim Moltzer, Jos Devriendt, Jacques Grange, Gustave Gautier, Sheila Hicks, and Cesar.Jacques Dumond is considered a leader of the French modernist movement — exemplifying minimalism, functionalism, and a reductive approach towards ornamentation. As an educator, he exerted a tremendous influence on the next generation of young designers. Motte is one of the most substantial post-war French modern designers. Reflecting a commitment to the idea that modern design could resolutely improve society, Motte remains a feature of everyday French life through his large-scale designs of public spaces throughout the country. Fermigier held an important place in the world of French design. After studying at the Ecole Boulle and later the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, he opened his own studio in 1957, devoting as much attention to challenges in interior design as he did to questions of industrial design.Pergay’s usage of stainless steel not only became her trademark but also changed the face of French decoration in the 1970s. Paulin is best known for his innovative designs for Dutch company Artifort of the 1960 famed “Mushroom Chair” (1959), the “Ribbon Chair” (1966) and the “Tongue Chair” (1968) that used foams and metallic frames with stretch materials and clear lines that cradled the body. Jean-Paul Barray & Kim Moltzer are French furniture designers. They are well known for their collaboration on the “Penta Chair,” a five-cornered shaped steel and natural canvas lounge chair for Bofinger, a German furniture manufacturer. Jean-Paul Barray was born in 1930 in Saint-Etienne, France, and was a designer, painter, sculpture, artist and engineering consultant. Kim Moltzer is also a French artist with decades of experience with furniture design and sculpture. Many of his designs follow the flow of plants and include leaves, bamboo and other natural designs. Belgian designer Jos Devriendt’s works are based on a late-surrealistic concept. His industrial designs are handcrafted and present simple solutions for rather complex problems. The acclaimed French designer Grange has acquired such clients as Yves Saint Laurent, Aerin Lauder, Princess Caroline of Monaco and Francis Ford Coppola, just to name a few. Grange was born in 1944 in a town called Saint-Amand-Montrond, located in the center of France. Gautier (1911-1980) first studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, where he was born, before entering at the National High School of the Arts Decoratifs in Paris, in the architecture section. Hicks established herself as one of the most innovative textile artists of the 20th century. Hicks is renowned for her painterly approach to textile design and an ability to craft environments through the unlikely medium of fiber. She has collaborated with prominent architects including Luis Barragan, Ricardo Legorreta and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). French sculptor Cesar Baldaccini was an internationally celebrated French artist who achieved acclaim for his truly radical approach to sculpture in the years following World War II. “Narratives” is on view at Demisch Danant, 30 W, 12th St, New York, USA.For details, visit: http://www.demischdanant.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
