After over four days of deliberation, the jury in Paul Manafort’s Virginia trial returned saying that they had a verdict on 8 of the 18 counts against Donald Trump’s campaign chairman. However, they have submitted a note to the court saying that they cannot come to a unanimous verdict on ten of the counts. Judge T. S. Ellis had previously indicated, outside the hearing of the jury, that he might accept a partial verdict. However, the earlier note from the jury, which asked “what happens if we can’t come to a consensus on a single count” suggested that the jury was stuck on only a single count. It’s unclear that the judge will accept this much less complete verdict. A jury hung on ten counts would make for a much greater chance the government could attempt to retry Manafort on those charges, and also makes it much more likely that Ellis will order the jury to resume deliberations for at least another day. Judge Ellis has announced that he plans to “poll the jury.” That is, to talk to them one on one, to determine how the jury is currently split. Ellis will inform attorneys after that poll what action will come next. The outcome of Paul Manafort’s trial in Virginia was handed over to the jury on Thursday morning following final instructions from Judge T. S. Ellis. Despite earlier conferences between the attorneys and Judge Ellis, and concerns over statements made by Ellis that were seen as potentially influencing jury opinions, both sides wrapped up their case on Wednesday afternoon and the jury went into chambers on Thursday morning. The jury sent several questions to Ellis on Thursday, asking for both a clear definition of “reasonable doubt” and to resolve issues around ownership of foreign accounts. On Tuesday morning, the jury asked Ellis what they should do if they were unable to reach agreement on a single count. Ellis returned them to the jury room to continue deliberations.
