BAM and Greenlight Bookstore co-present the launch of Jose Andres’ book “We Fed An Island” on September 11, 2018.Jose Andres, the chef who recently won the James Beard Award will participate in an evening of discussion to celebrate the launch of his book “We Fed An Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time.” “In his new book, Andres presents his observations and a holistic insider account of how a group of chefs got together to serve meals to millions of people of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and touched the hearts of many more,” says the BAM website. The BAM website mentions that Andres is the Chef/Owner of ThinkFoodGroup, the Founder/Chairman of World Central Kitchen, and the NGO behind #ChefsForPuertoRico. Their team reached Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria devastated the island. “Without any clean water, food, no power, no gas for most people, and no other means to communicate with the outside world, Andres took up the gargantuan task of addressing the humanitarian crisis in the only way he knew how; and that was by feeding people — one hot meal at a time. The book poignantly describes how a network of chefs, volunteers, and community kitchens brought about a drastic change and narrates an extraordinary story of hope in the face of disasters — both man-made and natural. Andres’ book offers suggestions on how to tackle a crisis of this magnitude in the future,” says the website.A major part of the proceeds from the event’s ticket will be donated to the Chef Relief Network of World Central Kitchen for efforts in Puerto Rico and beyond.Born in 1969, Jose Andre is a Spanish-American chef widely known for bringing the small plates dining concept to U.S.A. Kitchen, a social enterprise in California’s Los Angeles which works towards the reduction of food waste, provide job training, and increase access to nutritious food for those who can’t afford it. In a 2016 White House ceremony Andres was awarded a National Humanities Medal.Early during his career, Andres trained at the restaurant elBulli under Ferran Adria. In the year 2010, Andres, along with Ferran Adria taught a culinary physics course at Harvard University. In May 2012, Andres was appointed the dean of Spanish Studies at The International Culinary Center. The book launch is on September 11, 2018 at Peter Jay Sharp Building, BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, N.Y., 11217.For details, visit https://www.bam.org/talks/2018/jose-andresClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the Master Chef.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
