Open thread for night owls. Pizzigati: 'Confronting climate change in a deeply unequal world'

Sam Pizzigati at Inequality.org writes—Confronting Climate Change in a Deeply Unequal World. The global reaction to two landmark new reports suggests the planet could well lose that confrontation: Two meticulously sourced — and deeply disturbing — warnings about our shared global future have appeared over the past week. One has terrified much of the world. The other hasn’t, not yet at least, but most certainly should. You’ve most likely already encountered the first of these warnings, a grim reportfrom the United Nations  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a broad and distinguished panel of the world’s top climate scientists. They’re advising us that the level of global warming that governments once saw as “safe” would, if ever reached, trigger catastrophic dangers. Humanity has, the scientists tell us, about a dozen years to get our environmental act together. Or else . . . The second warning came from researchers at Oxfam, the global anti-poverty charity that has emerged as a top critic of our world’s increasingly concentrated income and wealth. Oxfam and the nonprofit Development Finance International have been working over recent years to develop an index that tracks how well the world’s nations are moving “to tackle the gap between rich and poor.” Oxfam released what amounted to a “beta” version of this index last year. The just-released second version, entitled The Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index 2018, offers us a considerably clearer picture of what nations are and aren’t doing to make our world more equal. The bottom line of the new Oxfam analysis: Nations aren’t doing nearly enough. Oxfam’s researchers examined the records of 157 nations. Of these 157, 112 “are doing less than half of what the best performers are managing to do.” [...] TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES QUOTATION “Entomologist Dr. Ovid Byron speaking to television journalist, Tina, who says, re: global warming, «Scientists of course are in disagreement about whether this is happening and whether humans have a role.» He replies: «The Arctic is genuinely collapsing. Scientists used to call these things the canary in the mine. What they say now is, The canary is dead. We are at the top of Niagara Falls, Tina, in a canoe. There is an image for your viewers. We got here by drifting, but we cannot turn around for a lazy paddle back when you finally stop pissing around. We have arrived at the point of an audible roar. Does it strike you as a good time to debate the existence of the falls?”                 ~~Barbara Kingsolver, Flight Behavior (2012) TWEET OF THE DAY xLindsey Graham, apparently a graduate of the Mike Huckabee Comedy Academy, tells Fox »News« that if a DNA test proved he was Iranian, »That would be, like, terrible."Upon hearing this news, all 80 million Iranians nod as one.— Victor Laszlo (@Impolitics) October 17, 2018 BLAST FROM THE PAST On this date at Daily Kos in 2007—The SEIU chessboard: John Edwards took a serious hit when he failed to garner the SEIU endorsement. Rather than a national endorsement, the union decided to give each local the power to make their own endorsements. This means, most importantly, that the national SEIU's significant war chest and its campaign operatives are out of commission in this primary. It also means members of locals can only campaign out of their state in places where those locals have endorsed the same candidate. So the Iowa local endorsed Edwards. Yeay Edwards! Except that Iowa's SEIU is small, with just 2,000 members. But neighboring Illinois has one of the biggest SEIU locals—100,000. Also nearby Indiana has another 70,000. Obama scored a coup by getting their endorsement. They're off the table for the Iowa battle. What about New Hampshire? 10,000 members, and another 70,000 in neighboring Massachusetts. But the regional mother lode is New York with 300,000 members. Edwards could sure use those guys and gals, but Hillary Clinton is the state's senator, and they're unlikely to piss off someone who might still be the state's senator after the primary. So she's the prohibitive favorite for the New York endorsement, again depriving Edwards of valuable boots on the ground and blunting the PR value of the endorsements he does get. On today’s Kagro in the Morning show: Republicans said tax cuts would pay for themselves, again. They didn't. Again. Is Mrs. Papadopoulos a Russian spy? Of course not! She's 34! Down in San Diego, the indicted Rep. Duncan Hunter goes full-on racist

California Rep. Duncan Hunter has been a terrible human being for many years. He's running for re-election in his San Diego congressional district while facing five dozen indictments for spending donor-given campaign funds on himself, his wife, and a string of affairs. His actual actions in Congress have been predictably odious. In a bid to save his behind in his hard-right Republican district, he's now eagerly going full racist trash, suggesting to voters that his opponent, the son of Palestinian and Latino parents, is a secret terrorist by virtue of his name. “He changed his name from Ammar Yasser Najjar to Ammar Campa-Najjar,” Hunter said at a recent campaign event, according to NPR, “so he sounds Hispanic ... That is how hard, by the way, that the radical Muslims are trying to infiltrate the U.S. government.” Not that it is any of the indicted trash bag's business, but Democratic opponent Campa-Najjar is Christian, he changed his name to honor his mother (not to trick the gubbermint), and he holds a federal security clearance due to his past position in the Obama administration. Duncan Hunter, in the meantime, is a serial affair-having, indicted campaign embezzler who inherited his identically-named father's congressional position in an act of grotesque, cynical nepotism. The overtly racist Republican, however, isn't just muttering such things to private crowds. He's cutting campaign ads based on those attacks, as well: GET OUT THE VOTE for Democrats. Desperate Republicans redefine overreaching as they try to tie Democrats to terrorism

It has been 17 years since the 9/11 attacks, but Republicans are desperate and they think tying Democrats to terrorism is one of their winningest issues. Health care? Taxes? Nah, they’re looking for any flimsy connection to terrorism they can find, and I do mean flimsy. Ohio Democrat Aftab Pureval was one of around 1,800 lawyers working for White & Case, a firm that represented Libya in a terrorism-related case. Pureval didn’t work on the case at all, and again, was one of 1,800 lawyers at the firm, but he’s a brown guy and that makes a basically nonexistent connection good enough for Republicans to run with. Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger was a covert CIA officer with a high level security clearance, but Republicans are trying to tie her to terrorism by dwelling on her time as a substitute teacher at a Muslim high school where one graduate was convicted of a plot to kill George W. Bush. And California Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is being connected to terrorism by way of his paternal grandfather, who was involved with the 1972 plot to kill Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics … but who died 16 years before Campa-Najjar was born. The ad, from indicted Rep. Duncan Hunter, says that Campa-Najjar changed his name to hide his family connections … when all he did was hyphenate his mother’s last name with his father’s last name, not dropping the name he shares with his late grandfather. But hey, he’s a Palestinian-Mexican-American with a problematic grandfather, so Republicans are not gonna be shy about lying.  Two of these three Democrats—Spanberger and Campa-Najjar—had security clearances in the past. But Republicans think they’re going to ride terrorism to victory, so reality has no place here. Want to get out the vote but can’t find an event near you? Leading Democrats want DHS to hand over unredacted family separation memo

Leading Democrats from the Senate and House Judiciary Committees are demanding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) hand over an unredacted copy of the internal memo Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen most assuredly signed authorizing state-sanctioned kidnaping at the southern border as official United States immigration policy. ”On June 17th, you tweeted, ‘We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period,’” Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California and Congress member Jerrold Nadler of New York wrote in their October 11 letter to Nielsen. “However, it has come to our attention that there was an internal memo on April 23rd recommending the implementation of a family separation policy that went to your office.” A redacted copy of this memo was obtained by Open the Government and the Project On Government Oversight late last month, which stated that DHS could “permissibly direct the separation of parents or legal guardians and minors held in immigration detention so that the parent or legal guardian can be prosecuted.” “To support that conclusion,” Feinstein and Nadler continue in their letter, “a footnote stated a full legal analysis of the family separation option was attached. The versions of this memo that are publicly available are heavily redacted or unsigned. The legal analysis justifying family separation included as an attachment to the memo is currently unavailable to the public.” While the signature on the redacted memo is blacked out, Open the Government and the Project On Government Oversight believe it was “almost certainly Nielsen’s, given that the memo is addressed to her.” Yet Nielsen has flat-out lied, repeatedly, about the family separation policy, with a complicit, Republican Congress refusing to hold her accountable. This comes, as Feinstein and Nadler note, as Trump is floating resurrecting the family separation policy, both as an election strategy and because his white supremacist advisers enjoy it. But even as officials float officially reviving this humanitarian crisis, dozens of migrant children kidnapped from their parents at the border continue to remain under U.S. custody.  Boiling with anger at Republicans? Get revenge by volunteering to get out the vote for Democrats. Click here, enter your zip code, choose the event that works best for you, and RSVP to attend.

DOJ's new head of civil rights cares more about corporate rights

There’s no arguing that Eric Dreiband is inexperienced. Unfortunately, most of the experience he does have involves hyper-partisan lawyering and pro-corporate endeavors. That’s hardly the background that typically qualifies an attorney to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Yet the Senate has just confirmed him, by a vote of 50-47. Dreiband spent three years under Kenneth Starr when he served as independent counsel, and he defended HB2, the North Carolina anti-transgender bathroom law. And that’s just his formal legal work. Dreiband also opposed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2008. Meanwhile, he’s a proponent of letting companies discriminate against applicants with a criminal record. His corporate resume includes arguing that Abercrombie & Fitch should be able to discriminate against a job applicant wearing a headscarf and getting R.J. Reynolds off the hook for age discrimination. Dreiband also defended Bloomberg against charges it lowered pregnant women’s salaries. As a general matter, he’s no fan of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Vanita Gupta, head of the Leadership Conference of Civil and Human Rights, confirms as much: “Dreiband has spent most of his career opposing important civil rights legislation and defending corporations who discriminate against their workers.” There’s little doubt he’s going to add promoting “religious freedom” to his ignoble mission. “The head of the Civil Rights Division is no ordinary government appointment—it is an advocate for the most vulnerable among us,” Representative Sheila Jackson Lee reminds us. “Yet, the individual confirmed yesterday has a long track record of positions inapposite to the mandate of the Civil Rights Division.” Even Republicans recognize Dreiband is a bad choice to head the Civil Rights Division. That’s why they took more than a year to put Dreiband up for a floor vote. That they had so much trouble getting to a vote is especially significant in light of how integral his role is to a smoothly functioning DOJ.

Watch: Benches clear after Machado commits dirty play at first base

Manny Machado’s dirty play at first base during the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 4 of the NLCS on Tuesday night led benches to clear between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers. Machado grounded out against Junior Guerra for the second out of the inning. As he was running to first, he headed towards the inside of the baseline and then dragged his left leg to clip Jesus Aguilar by the bag. Machado’s actions led to a strong response from Aguilar and the other players on the field: The Brewers already had strong feelings towards Machado after his slide to break up a double play the night before drew some attention. But make no mistake about it: this was a dirty play by Machado, and Milwaukee had every right to be upset. That’s a garbage, bush league play. Machado said earlier that he doesn’t like to hustle. Now we can see that he prefers to play dirty instead.
