California is at the vanguard of the resistance, so time to upgrade its senator with Kevin de León

By all measures, California is one of the most liberal states in the country. It was a state that Hillary Clinton won 62-32. (The 3-million vote advantage in the state was the same as Clinton’s national popular-vote victory margin.) Democrats hold every statewide elected position, plus supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature. This complete governmental dominance (and ballot initiatives) has delivered a steady stream of progressive legislation—environmental protections, sanctuary state status, $15 minimum wage, legalized pot, increased gun restrictions—while maintaining the state’s status as one of the world’s economic powerhouses. Indeed, if California were a country, it would be the sixth-largest economy in the world.  Thus, the GOP fantasy that liberal governance is bad for business is, well, bunk. And as a minority-majority state, it’s showing that America’s demographic future is a strength, not something to be feared by the shrinking white majority. Shepherding that progressive renaissance in the state legislature? Senate Majority Leader Kevin de León, who we are now endorsing in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate against incumbent Dianne Feinstein. As Harold Meyerson wrote, “California has emerged as the capital of anti-Trump America, and, more than that, as the progressive model for America’s future. That shift is due as much to de León as to anyone else.” Feinstein may have been a breath of fresh air when first elected in 1992—this was an era when California still elected ideologically odious Republican governors like Ronald Reagan and Pete Wilson (elected governor two years before Feinstein was elected to the Senate in 1992). Unfortunately, Feinstein has failed to evolve with her state, making her a relic of a bygone era. She should’ve retired to accolades; instead, she’s trying to hang on to a state she no longer reflects.

Grassley forges ahead with Mueller protection bill, removing language Democrats objected to

Campaign Action The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act on Thursday, bipartisan legislation to establish Justice Department guidelines for protecting special counsel investigations as law. Under the legislation, a special counsel could not be fired without cause and would a 10-day window to challenge a dismissal in federal court. A controversial amendment from Chairman Chuck Grassley that would have allowed Congress to micromanage investigations has been removed. That means Democratic support is likely there in committee, so now Grassley has to fight his own party and leadership. The tweaked amendment from Grassley came as other Republicans who are opposed to the legislation prepared their own plans for the markup. The second-ranking Senate Republican, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, introduced an amendment Wednesday to have a «sense of the Senate resolution» warning the White House not to fire Mueller, instead of a bill to formally protect the special counsel. «I think that might be a way forward because it avoids the unconstitutionality issue on a bill the President won's sign and the House won't pass,» Cornyn told reporters. «So, that may be a place for us to land. Because, as I've said, I think it would be a mistake for the President to fire Director Mueller and I think if we can come to some common ground on a resolution, that might be the path forward.» […] Grassley's amendment as filed has reporting requirements to Congress at the conclusion of the investigation, including whether the attorney general «granted or denied a request from the Special Counsel to change the Special Counsel's jurisdiction.» The amendment also requires information in that concluding report to Congress «detailing the factual findings of the investigation and explaining the prosecution or declination decisions reached by the special counsel.» Thursday, Apr 26, 2018 · 3:23:54 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter The committee approved the legislation in a 14-7 vote. Republicans Grassley, Graham, Flake, Tillis joined all of the Democrats.

Growth, down. Stock market, down. Optimism, down. The tax cut boost to the economy, non-existent.

Donald Trump loves to tweet about the stock market. He’s done so at least 17 times since the election. He also loves to tweet about polls showing Americans are optimistic about the economy. But Trump isn’t likely to tweet about this ... Main Street's confidence in the stock market is crumbling at the fastest pace since at least 1987. ... Just 33% of people polled by the Conference Board this month expected stock prices to rise over the next year. After hitting a peak in January, the market has dropped more than 2,500 points. The result has been a lot of nervous 401K owners eyeing shrinking retirement funds. Though it’s not as if some people aren’t doing very well. Big banks just received the first installment of benefits corporate America will reap from the new federal tax law. The haul: more than $2.5 billion. With Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director Mick Mulvaney telling them they don’t have to worry about things like discrimination or regulation, so long as they pony up a little vigorish, bankers can keep walking on the sunny side of the street. But for everyone else the economy seems to be shifting into lower gear. Despite Trump’s ecstatic predictions of rocket-like growth if we only passed a tax cut giving 83 percent of benefits to 1 percent of Americans, things haven’t been quite as rosy as promised. “There has been a general downward drift and the quarter is looking a little softer than expected,” said Ethan Harris, head of global economics research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York. “The effects of the tax cuts build very slowly as the year unfolds. We need more time for the fiscal stimulus to show up.” Wall Street is sure this slowdown is temporary. After all, Americans are seeing “fatter paychecks.” so they’re bound to start spending. Any day now. Any day. Especially when they realize that most Americans got less than $20 per paycheck. And that $20 is looking smaller and smaller as savings shrink and the cost of living increases.

Soaring Wire Mesh Buildings Cast Ethereal Shadows Over Coachella Music Festival

Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi (previously), known for his massive architectural sculptures made of wire, built three transparent structures for this year’s Coachella music festival in California. Titled ‘Etherea’, the sculptural series was comprised of three identical buildings in different sizes, inspired by Neoclassical and Baroque aesthetics. The buildings were illuminated at night with a hazy lavender glow that emphasized the illusion of Etherea’s solidity. You can hear Tresoldi share more about his work in a TED talk, and see previous installations on his website, Instagram, and Facebook. More

Roger Goodell for years now has been greeted with boos, hisses and catcalls whenever he approaches the podium at an NFL draft. A plan, however, apparently is in place that should prevent most fans in attendance Thursday night at AT&T Stadium from giving him a rude welcome. As the host of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys have done the NFL commissioner a courtesy by planning to have a handful of team legends join Goodell on stage at the beginning of the evening’s festivities, per an ESPN report.
