Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled a proposal to pedestrianize the city of London through an interconnected system of walkways. In their research proposal “Walkable London,” the firm has identified the areas and arteries in their home city that would benefit from the walkway system. The proposal indicates the transformation to be implemented in three phases: primary avenues, secondary avenues, and finally, entire districts. Upper Street, Regent Street, and Oxford Street are some of the notable avenues that will be pedestrianized, noted ArchDaily.The architects on the Walkable London website stated: “All over the world, we are observing the trend towards pedestrianising whole districts rather than individual streets. Zaha Hadid Architects proposes ‘Walkable London,’ a full-scale network of pedestrian routes which will create corridors of activation across the capital. Transforming just a few streets will hardly make a big difference in terms of congestion, pollution, safety, public health, economic benefits and social capital.
