Why do so many conservatives think of themselves as victims?

There’s a guy I work with who generally likes to be the life of the party. If there’s ever time to mess around, he likes to be in the middle of things with jokes, and teasing people. And he can genuinely be a fun addition to the atmosphere of the place. But there are also times he’s a sullen mess because he’s also one of the most sensitive people I’ve ever met, where anything one may or may not realize they’re doing could be interpreted as a slight in his eyes, even though he can be the first to crack wise if it’s someone else. So there are days where he sits silently, like someone in mourning, with everyone walking up to him saying: “Are you okay?” It’s almost like he gets off on the attention, and needs validation in order to function. Needless to say, it’s both annoying and tiring to deal with a drama queen, but most people go along to get along. After the 2016 presidential election, I remember hearing a reporter on NPR trying to make sense of Trump voters, and he recalled speaking to an older, white, male Trump voter from red-rural-istan America who said something along the lines (paraphrasing): “Now, you won’t ignore us and disrespect us. You’ll have to listen.” At the time, and even now, my reaction was astonishment because out there somewhere there are white people full of resentment who think themselves the victims in this society. This is not to say white people don’t have problems, or there aren’t problems which affect rural whites that are as difficult as any other. There are, and they deserve to be addressed like any other issue. It just strikes me as funny that when looking at the grand scheme of problems and issues this country faces, there are people who think it’s white men who got it bad, and are not being listened to. And these people tend to think everyone else has a hand in their pocket, everyone else is slighting their existence, and everyone isn’t showing them the proper respect. Why? The lack of proper respect comes down to being told they’re wrong, or—like my coworker—freaking out over nothing. Whether it be scientists, Hollywood, the media, or Democrats, calling stupid ideas stupid has somehow become “elitist” and evidence of bias. It’s one of the bitterest ironies that the people who bitch and moan about political correctness and wear shirts saying “fuck your feelings” are the ones whining about respect whenever a TV show or movie has a story which steps on their toes, or a science article actually advocates science. So what gives? Where does this victim mentality come from?

Open thread for night owls: Rotten 'Bank Lobbyist Act' up for House vote Tuesday

Andrea Germanos at Common Dreams writes—Progressives Sound Alarm Ahead of Tuesday House Vote on 'Bank Lobbyist Act’: Progressive lawmakers and advocacy groups are sounding alarm on Monday ahead of the U.S. House's vote on a financial deregulatory bill dubbed the «Bank Lobbyist Act.» Declaring her opposition, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) tweeted, «We need to #ProtectConsumers, not big banks.» The legislation is S. 2155, officially titled the “Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.” It already passed the Senate in March with the help of 16 Democrats and Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), and praise from big banks. The House is expected to vote on it Tuesday. Summing up the dangers of the legislation, Public Citizen tweeted: xThe #BankLobbyistAct would:-Allow banks to engage in the kind of risky behavior that caused the 2008 financial crash-Make taxpayer-funded bailouts more likely-Exempt 25 of the nation’s largest banks from needed oversightDon’t let the House pass it: https://t.co/UaCFqIK9MZ— Public Citizen (@Public_Citizen) May 20, 2018 The advocacy group also joined dozens of organizations including the National Consumer Law Center and the NAACP on Friday in sending a letter (pdf) to representatives urging them to «not roll back consumer protections under the Dodd-Frank Act that have helped and continue to help millions of people across the country.» That letter came less than a month after scores of other groups called onrepresentatives to oppose the bill, noting that it also would enable racially discriminatory lending practices by weakening reporting requirements under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA). Recognizing such threats, members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus have been taking to social media to announce their opposition to the bill they say sets the stage for another financial crisis. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), for example, tweeted that the bill would «roll back some of the protections against Wall Street greed that we put in place after the financial crash. I will do everything I can to see this #BankLobbyistAct defeated.» [...] TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES QUOTATION “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”                 ~~Isaac Isimov (1980) TWEET OF THE DAY xTrump said a trade war would be easy to win, but as it approached, and China targeted his base in rural America, those bone spurs flared up again. Now Trump has ditched the steel workers and settled for $500M for his Indonesia project in exchange for him taking another deferment.— Facts Do Matter (@WilDonnelly) May 21, 2018 BLAST FROM THE PAST On this date at Daily Kos in 2010—As it makes live feed available, BP admits oil flow worse than claimed:  So what might be motivating BP to concede their claim of 5,000 barrels per day was wrong? Perhaps the fact that they have finally posted a live feed of the oil gushing from the main leak. In my experience watching the feed, it's had some technical hiccups, but I was able to watch about five minutes before the video screen went black. It's incredibly disturbing — clouds of oil billowing from the site of the leak, at times appearing far, far worse than the initial video BP released. The fact that BP now claims to be siphoning off 5,000 barrels per day but the flow of oil appears to be as bad as ever tells you just how massive this leak is. CBS was the first news organization to get its hands on the live feed and showed it to Purdue Professor of Mechanical Engineering Steven Werely. He estimates that nearly 100,000 barrels — 4 million gallons or an Exxon Valdez every three days — is still spewing from the leak. On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Greg Dworkin is back! A wild weekend of Trump fuming, plot thickening (and probably Trump thickening), wave building and GOP disarraying. Saudish Arabia is back in the mix. And yes, another mass shooting means another pass at guessing the «cause.»  x Embedded Content RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) LINK TO DAILY KOS STORE

Houston police chief pens viral statement on ‘so-called people of faith’ who defend gun rights

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo has been in the news lately because of his humanitarian calls for decency surrounding President Trump’s and Jeff Sessions’ terrorist campaign against undocumented families. But on Friday evening, Chief Acevedo took to his Facebook page to express his feelings surrounding the terrible school shooting tragedy that unfolded last week at Santa Fe High School, a few miles outside of Houston. To all my Facebook friends. Today I spent the day dealing with another mass shooting of children and a responding police officer who is clinging to life. I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve shed tears of sadness, pain and anger. I know some have strong feelings about gun rights but I want you to know I’ve hit rock bottom and I am not interested in your views as it pertains to this issue. Please do not post anything about guns aren’t the problem and there’s little we can do. My feelings won’t be hurt if you de-friend me and I hope yours won’t be if you decide to post about your views and I de-friend you. I have never accepted the status-quo in anything I do and I’ve never accepted defeat. And I won’t do it now. I will continue to speak up and will stand up for what my heart and my God commands me to do, and I assure you he hasn’t instructed me to believe that gun-rights are bestowed by him. The hatred being spewed in our country and the new norms we, so-called people of faith are accepting, is as much to blame for so much of the violence in our once pragmatic Nation. This isn’t a time for prayers, and study and Inaction, it’s a time for prayers, action and the asking of God’s forgiveness for our inaction (especially the elected officials that ran to the cameras today, acted in a solemn manner, called for prayers, and will once again do absolutely nothing). I close by saying, I wish those that move on from this page the best. May God Bless you and keep you. For more discussion, head over to First Amendment’s diary here.

White House attempts to prove Trump isn't a racist with a press release about 'violent animals'

Last week, Donald Trump let loose with yet another racist rant against immigrants: “These aren’t people. These are animals.” After being called out for his vile eliminationist rhetoric, Team Trump—including the Racist-in-Chief himself—insisted that he was talking about MS-13 gang members. Unfortunately for the White House, no one was buying it. And so, nearly a week later, Trump’s communications team is on it, issuing a press release to prove Trump isn’t a racist:  WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE VIOLENT ANIMALS OF MS-13 In it we learn—10 times!—that a violent gang is violent and are totally the animals Trump was ranting about last week: The violent animals … violence of MS-13’s animals … MS-13 animals … The MS-13 animals … The two MS-13 animals … by MS-13 animals … MS-13’s animals … by MS-13 animals ... the animals of MS-13 … these violent animals ...  Of course no one is defending MS-13 and no one is suggesting they aren’t violent. But if the crack communications team at the White House really wants to prove that Trump isn’t a racist, and that he wasn’t launching yet another dehumanizing attack against immigrants, maybe they should get him to stop launching dehumanizing attacks and policies against immigrants.  Just a thought.

Netflix announces huge multi-year deal with America's favorite first couple

Barack and Michelle Obama have signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce a variety of new content for the growing subscription television service. xPresident Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have entered into a multi-year agreement to produce films and series for Netflix, potentially including scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features.— Netflix US (@netflix) May 21, 2018 More on the deal from the New York Times: The deal will give Mr. Obama an international television platform during his post-presidency, allowing him to reach millions of people in the United States and internationally. The couple has created “Higher Ground Productions,” a company to produce content for Netflix, the streaming service announced. The former president has told associates that he does not intend to use the new platform to wage a public campaign against his successor in the Oval Office, or to fight against conservative media outlets like Fox News. Instead, a release from Netflix said the Obamas will produce “scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features” that highlight issues and themes the president pursued during his eight years in office. “One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix — we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

Trump officials snooped for 'negative information' about Haitian TPS recipients, emails show

As far back as a year ago, the Associated Press reported that Trump administration officials were secretly snooping into the backgrounds of Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients “for evidence of crimes” in order to justify ending their protections, a charge that was denied by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). But, according to emails obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and now made public by the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, that’s exactly what they were up to: The latest emails show that, in April 2017, Kathy Nuebel Kovarik, the chief of policy and strategy at [U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services], asked her staff to provide her with data showing how many Haitian TPS holders were on public assistance, how many had committed crimes, and how much money they were sending back to Haiti. When USCIS staff couldn’t get the data Nuebel Kovarik wanted, she asked if they could “figure out [how] to conduct a random sampling of files that we could then use to generalize the entire community.” Kovarik, according to WNYC, “explained that the Homeland Security Secretary ‘is going to need this to make a final decision’ that spring on whether to extend TPS for Haitians. They were granted the right to stay in the U.S. after a devastating 2010 earthquake.” Permissions that were then terminated by the administration the following November, claiming that conditions in Haiti had improved, when clearly they were digging for any reason to justify their deportation. «Keep in mind that this is in no way relevant to deciding whether to extend or terminate TPS designation to a country under the statute,» said National Immigration Project’s Sejal Zota. «It really suggests that they were attempting to manufacture a basis to deny TPS. That they went on this fishing expedition to paint all Haitians as criminals and as unauthorized immigrants.»
