What’s particularly frustrating is that the media goes along with Trump’s framing in headlines and ledes while acknowledging elsewhere that this is on Republicans. Bloomberg is among the outlets crediting Republicans with efforts to avert a shutdown, “without Democratic support,” as the headline puts it even as the article calls the current Republican plan to include children’s health funding while excluding Dreamers “election-year brinkmanship by [Republican House Speaker Paul] Ryan and his leadership team.” According to the Boston Globe, “Democrats are seriously contemplating a government shutdown for the first time since Republicans won back Washington in last year’s elections.” But the Globe knows better, with an editorial headlined “Only the GOP can prevent a government shutdown” and arguing: The real problem seems to be that GOP factions — deficit hawks, military hawks, Tea Party zealots, pro- and anti-immigrant legislators, President Trump’s various personalities — can’t agree on a deal among themselves. The president appeared to endorse a plan to include immigration measures in the bill last week but then reversed himself on Thursday. Democrats and Republicans both say they want to keep the government open. But only the GOP has the power to do so. And yet the Trumpian headlines pile up. You know better, guys.
