Interior Secretary Zinke held private meeting with executives of a company he still owns shares in

We're a year into the Trump administration, and scandals from nearly every administration appointee just keep coming. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is a shareholder in a private Montana company that manufactures and sells firearms and advanced weapons materials, a financial interest he did not disclose when nominated last year. In response to inquiries from HuffPost, both Zinke and the company, PROOF Research Inc., confirmed the secretary’s holdings, though the dollar value placed on them varied. This previously undisclosed holding comes to light after numerous decisions in his first year in office that benefited the hunting and gun industries. Zinke has been one of the gun lobby's most reliable allies across all issues, in this administration, but in this case the link is distinctly personal. Zinke had previously done consulting work for this particular company a half-decade back and currently owns only a token number of shares; Whether Zinke was obligated to disclose them depends whether his shares were worth more or less than $1000, back when he was writing up that paperwork. The company's primary shareholder asserts that they are not. But it's the second bit that's more troubling. Once again, it seems that any company based in Whitefish, Montana—the former congressman's hometown—has been getting a prince's treatment when it comes to getting government attention and contracts—and Zinke isn't troubled by federal conflict-of-interest laws when it comes to who he meets with.

Because Trump is too stupid to know just how stupid he is

Blake Hounshell at Politico Magazine published “Confessions of a Russiagate Skeptic” recently, in an attempt, perhaps, to excuse his failure to take seriously the threat that Trump could have conspired with Russia. HIs reasoning: I keep coming back to the slapdash nature of Trump’s 2016 operation, and the chaos and dysfunction that everyone who covered that campaign saw play out each day. Like the Trump White House, the Trump campaign was a viper’s nest of incompetence and intrigue, with aides leaking viciously against one another almost daily. So much damaging information poured out of Trump Tower that it’s hard to believe a conspiracy to collude with Moscow to win the election never went public. If there was such a conspiracy, it must have been a very closely guarded secret. Then there’s the Trump factor to consider. Here’s a man who seems to share every thought that enters his head, almost as soon as he enters it. He loves nothing more than to brag about himself, and he’s proven remarkably indiscreet in the phone calls he makes with “friends” during his Executive Time—friends who promptly share the contents of those conversations with D.C. reporters. If Trump had cooked up a scheme to provide some favor to Putin in exchange for his election, wouldn’t he be tempted to boast about it to someone? Just like he bragged about paying off Stormy Daniels? Or publicly discussed his mob connections? The same media now wringing their hands over missing the obvious Russian connections loudly touted every false claim in Clinton Cash without a qualm.  And they are compounding their error by assuming that the know-nothing, loudmouthed braggart currently occupying the Oval Office is simply incapable of conspiring with Russia and keeping quiet about it. Bullshit. Just because he lacks knowledge and ability in one area does not mean he cannot competently keep his mouth shut while participating in a criminal enterprise.

Lots can go wrong with armed teachers. And already has.

It seems that everyone already has a pretty good sense of what could go wrong Donald Trump’s “plan” to arm teachers. Having collected the thousands of stories that became the GunFAIL series, I know that most of those things already have happened. I’m able to recall off the top of my head the Utah elementary school teacher who injured herself in an accidental discharge while in the restroom, shattering the toilet in the process. And the professor at Idaho State who accidentally shot himself in the foot during his lecture. Or the Pennsylvania teacher who left her loaded weapon behind in the bathroom, where it was found by students. Prefer armed guards or school resource officers, instead? They haven’t been doing much better. For instance, sometimes they leave their guns behind in the bathroom, too. Somehow their “special training” hasn’t convinced them, for instance, not to clean their weapons while on duty. And of course, who could forget the time the outsourced, private security guard hired by the University of Florida accidentally shot a student? The truth is, of course, we have forgotten that, if we even heard about it in the first place. Which is highly unlikely, because we still treat gun accidents like local curiosities in this country, barely noticing even when toddlers routinely shoot themselves dead with loose guns found in mom’s purse, in bedside tables, or on top of kitchen counters that they “can’t reach.” Even the above-linked NBC story describing Trump’s proposal to arm teachers as “colossally stupid” cites the example of Utah’s trained teachers, with no mention of the fact that they’d actually already had a teacher accidentally shoot herself on the job. So we know what can go wrong, because we’ve seen it go wrong. And a lot of smart people have even correctly guessed that arming teachers will create enormous liability issues for the schools, the school systems, the teachers, and everybody associated with administering it. But there’s another aspect of the Utah teacher story that is probably more predictive than a collection of GunFAIL anecdotes. Even the most hardcore boosters of the proposal still feel compelled to sell it to doubters by pointing out that participating teachers will be specially trained, and required to adhere to strict safety protocols at all times. But I’m here to tell you that those safety measures aren’t worth much in practice.
