With top FBI elections protection official gone, Trump talks about giving the job to Putin

Lost in Monday's Surrender Summit in which Russian asset Donald Trump Velcroed himself to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was related and unsettling news from The Wall Stret Journal. The senior FBI official that has been overseeing the task force charged with keeping Russia out of our elections has resigned. Jeff Tricoli has been a co-leader of the agency's foreign influence task force and now he's off to make more money as a senior vice president at Charles Schwab. He left in June, and no one at the FBI is giving comment as to why, but, as the WSJ says, «it adds to questions among some tech companies and lawmakers about how much the administration, and the task force in particular, are doing to protect future elections from Russian meddling.» Indeed, particularly now that we know that the occupier of the Oval Office has put his trust in Putin, undermining the nation's intelligence community. All the FBI is saying is this: «The FBI takes any effort to interfere with our democratic institutions extremely seriously,» it said. «For that reason, last year, Director Wray announced the Foreign Influence Task Force. Since its creation, the FITF has been an active, forward-looking task force.» A congressional intelligence panel staffer who has been briefed on the task force's activities echoes criticism from tech companies and other investigators that the task force hasn't been effective and has been more reactive than proactive. «So far there has not been a lot of substance yet from the task force,» the staffer told the WSJ. There was a meeting with the task force and «several major internet companies» in May, a meeting that «left some tech companies in attendance believing that the government wasn't seriously committed to collaborating to deter foreign-sponsored election-interference campaigns.» That makes one bit of this whole summit even more concerning. For two hours and 10 minutes, Trump and Putin were in a room alone together, with just interpreters. We have no idea what they discussed, but a glimmer of those talks emerged in the press conference after: Putin's suggestion that he send in his cybersecurity team to «help» the U.S. team in a joint task force. «We can analyze [evidence] through the joint working group on cybersecurity, the establishment of which we discussed during our previous contacts,» Putin said, referencing previous conversations he's had with Trump about this. In fact, they have been talking about it, as confirmed by tweets Trump wrote earlier this month, writing the two «discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded … and safe.» So the FBI guy heading up the already problematic task force to keep Russia from meddling in future elections—like the one we're having in four months—is gone and Trump wants to hand it over to Putin. What could go wrong?

Trump 're-election' campaign blows past $1 million in legal bills since January

Whether Donald Trump will attempt to run for a second «presidential» term in 2020 is an open question. True, his re-election campaign launched almost immediately after he moved into the White House, but as of yet the Donald Trump 2020 campaign appears to largely exist as a way for Donald Trump to get his dimwitted supporters to pay his team's legal bills. So far this year, the campaign has spent about $1.2 million on those legal fees. Eight law firms and the Trump Corporation were paid by the campaign for legal consulting. The bulk of the Trump campaign's legal spending, or about $180,000, went to the law firm Jones Day. Two others firms — Harder LLP and Larocca, Hornik, Rosen, Greenberg & Blaha, which are involved in the legal fight with [Stormy] Daniels — were paid a combined nearly $54,000. That's right, you family values voters. If you've donated to the Trump/Pence re-election campaign there's a good chance part of your money went to help defend Donald in his legal battles to silence the porn star he cheated on Melania with. Or to defend former bodyguard Keith Schiller. Or to defend Trump «lawyer» Michael Cohen. Because all those people need a lot of defending, and that ain't cheap, and we can hardly ask Donald Trump, supposed super-mega-billionaire, to chip in himself. No, that's your task, Trump supporters. You poor, dumb suckers.

Russian spy worked with Trump, the NRA, and a who's-who of Republican politicians at all levels

On Monday, Russian pro-gun activist and lifetime NRA member Maria Butina, was arrested on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and acting as a covert agent of the Russian government. The indictment against Butina, on the same day that Donald Trump so weakly acquiesced to Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, came after years in which the Russian agent openly presented herself as a gateway between Republican causes and Russia. During that time she not only supported the candidacy of Trump, but worked with other prominent members of the GOP, promoted Republican visits to Moscow, and secured pro-Russian statements from right-wing politicians up and down the line. Butina has been a prominent and vocal presence in the link between the National Rifle Association and Russian pro-gun groups. But she has also inserted herself into other lobbying efforts, both for guns and for Russia. That includes open claims that she was a conduit between the Russian government and the campaign of Donald Trump. Depending on the audience, Butina has presented herself as a Russian central bank staffer, a leading gun rights advocate, a “representative of the Russian Federation,” a Washington, D.C., graduate student, a journalist, and a connection between Team Trump and Russia. She used each role to help her gain more high-level contacts in the nation’s capital. Butina’s claims to be an agent of the Russian central bank aren’t completely false. She is a lieutenant of Russian oligarch Alexander Torshin, who is the deputy governor of the central bank. Torshin heads up the Russian end of the gun manufacturing lobby, Right to Bear Arms.  The NRA may have been Butina’s biggest source of political connections, but it was far from the only one. She made it clear that she had money, made it clear that she was looking to make connections with Republicans, and made it clear what she wanted: For the Republican Party to become the champion of Russia. And that doesn’t mean just Donald Trump. As the Washington Post makes clear in their timeline of Butina’s actions ... April 24, 2015: Butina attends the NRA convention in Nashville. There she and Torshin meet Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wis.), who reportedly greets her in Russian. Butina was there again for the launch of Scott Walker’s campaign. But, of course, she was also laying other bets.

Republicans know Trump's Putin performance was a disaster. But do anything about it? Ha

How bad was Donald Trump’s performance at his press conference with Vladimir Putin on Monday? So bad that half a dozen Fox News personalities were critical. So bad that: A former senior White House official, who worked closely with Trump, immediately texted us: “Need a shower.” One of Trump's own former National Security Council officials texted: “Dude. This is a total [effing] disgrace. The President has lost his mind." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he agreed with the intelligence community on Russia’s responsibility for election interference. House Speaker Paul Ryan also backed up the intelligence community and said that “The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally.” Other Republicans in Congress were critical.  But while few Republicans (Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Rand Paul show that there are exceptions) are out defending Trump’s performance, here’s the key thing: there’s no sign that any Republican in a position to do anything to limit Trump is going to … do anything to limit Trump. Enough senators issued critical quotes to jam up the Senate if they cared enough to do so. But whether because they’re cowards or because they don’t care as long as they get their tax cuts or because they’re secretly glad to keep taking Russia’s elections help, Republicans aren’t going to lift a finger to stop Trump from sitting back and doing nothing—or actively taking part—as Putin undermines American democracy. Republicans could stop Trump. The fact that they won’t tells us something about today’s Republican Party.

NPA crisis: ICICI audit committee hires law firm to probe into 31 accounts

The independent audit committee investigating the alleged irregularities in 31 NPA accounts of ICICI Bank has hired a law firm to assist the panel, an official said today. «An independent law firm has been appointed by the audit committee looking into the matter,» said a bank official on the condition of anonymity. He said however that as the audit committee comprises the bank's independent directors, the bank is not aware of the name of the law firm hired in this matter that is under investigation. As per reports, law firm Panag & Babu has been roped in by the audit committee. However, when contacted, the firm's spokesperson declined to comment. ICICI Bank said in June that it had received an anonymous complaint which alleged irregularities with respect to 31 borrower accounts, leading to incorrect asset classification. The audit committee of the board of directors of the bank has three members chaired by Uday Chitale, Dileep Choksi (alternate chairperson) and Radhakrishnan ...
