Bouroullec Brothers Design a Low-cost Minimal Chair

French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec recently unveiled their series of minimal chairs, designed for Danish brand Hay, at the Milan Design Week. The duo was inspired to create “The Elementaire Chair” as an aesthetically appealing alternative to the existing plastic chairs. Though designed to be as simple and inexpensive as a “white T-shirt or blue jeans,” the chair is robust for long-term use while featuring a delicate aesthetic. The Elementaire chair recalls the aluminum Hole chair that the Bouroullecs had designed for Italian furniture brand Cappellini in 1999. Made in polypropylene, the structure has no visible joints, which according to the designers lends “a certain harmony and calmness” to the chairs.“The world is full of plastic chairs with the wrong colors and shapes. We can see it in a lot of beautiful cities in Europe, for example. A nice street with an awful terrace full of pink or light green chairs that totally spoil the place,” Ronan told Dezeen. “People have no problem buying expensive trainers, but they still don't want to buy expensive furniture. We worked to do it at a low-cost. It’s like a white T-shirt or blue jeans, it's a rough chair that you can use everywhere,” he added. “We wanted to use the most efficient way to mass-produce something, and at the same time to create the most beautiful chair, but beautiful in terms of being extremely well-designed. Not too loud, not too shy. Just exactly balanced. A chair that could work in a lot of different contexts,” he continued. The Elementaire chair was launched at the recently held Milan Design Week. http://www.blouinartinfo.com/                           Founder: Louise Blouin

Former Hong Kong Central Police Station to Partially Reopen in May as Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts

A new cultural site in Hong Kong, Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, formerly the Hong Kong Central Police Station, will partially open to the public with a soft launch on May 25, 2018.The Central Police Station (CPS) Revitalization Project is moving ahead with preparations for the opening of the CPS site, in three phases beginning in mid-2018. The site will be operated as Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, named after the local colloquial name for the historic compound.Statutory permits and certificates have been obtained for the project following the completion of inspections of 15 historic buildings, the new art gallery, and auditorium buildings and associated structures in the CPS compound. Conservation, restoration, and construction works have been certified by the authorities as having been carried out according to the approved building plans, and meeting the buildings, antiquities protection, and public safety requirements. The revitalization project is led by The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club) in partnership with the Government of the HKSAR. Comprising a cluster of three declared monuments with a total of 16 historic buildings and outdoor spaces on the 13,600-square-metre site, the project is by far the largest heritage conservation and revitalization project in Hong Kong and the largest such project undertaken by the Club.A series of tests of the facilities have begun, with more trial runs planned for the next few weeks. An opening ceremony is planned for May 25, which will be followed by community days and visits, initially for a limited number of visitors. This will give Tai Kwun an opportunity to fine-tune its operation before the site is fully open. Details of the opening and visit arrangements, programmes, and services for visitors will be announced in due course.Tai Kwun is the local colloquial name used by police officers and the public alike to refer to the former police headquarters and the surrounding CPS compound. The name has been adopted by The Jockey Club CPS Limited for the project as a reminder of the historical importance of the compound.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/                               Founder Louise Blouin
