Convention Defying Fashion at New Orleans Museum of Art
The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) will soon be hosting an exhibition of works titled “A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes.”The exhibition features the world’s largest private collections of Alexander McQueen fashion. The first major exhibit on fashion includes contemporary designers showcased in an immersive gallery presentation. The bold couture on display explores the various archetypes of femininity, and how these mythic characters are manifested through storytelling in fashion over the past decade. “A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes” showcases more than 100 experimental gowns, headpieces, jewelry, and shoes by 30 of the world’s contemporary designers. Designers featured in the exhibition include like McQueen, Prada, Chanel, and Comme des Garçons along with innovative and out of the box fashion such as Chromat’s body-positive architectural looks and Iris van Herpen’s cutting-edge technology based dresses.Alexander McQueen (1969–2010) was a British fashion designer and couturier. He was a master at creating narratives through his collections and runway shows. McQueen used fashion to explore seven archetypal personality types of a Queen, or metaphorically, of a woman. These were The Mother Earth, Sage, Magician, Enchantress, Explorer, Heroine, and Thespian. Based on the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s work, they are based on recurring motifs in myths and fairy tales from around the world. The narrative of each female archetype such as its powers, weaknesses, and significance is skillfully reflected in the show through fashion, photography, and artwork. “A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes” highlights how fashion can be used as an art form depicting glamour, theatricality, wit, and innovations. “This is a sensational collection, full of work that stretches our ideas about fashion design,” says Mel Buchanan, NOMA’s RosaMary Curator of Decorative Arts & Design. “This clothing shows beauty, certainly, but also pain and humor. A Queen Within explores complex human emotions through the archetypes of a mufti-faceted fictional queen.”“A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes” runs from February 21 through May 28, 2018, at the New Orleans Museum of Art, 1 Collins Diboll Cir, New Orleans, LA 70124, USA.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/285541/museum-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
