Los Angeles and New York City-based FreelandBuck has created a site-specific installation “Parallax Gap” featuring a series of nine ceilings at the Renwick Gallery’s Bettie Rubenstein Grand Salon. The ceilings catalog eclectic examples of American architectural styles including Victorian Gothic, Beaux Arts, Greek Revival, Romanesque, Art Deco, Neoclassical, and Second Empire.FreelandBuck has taken the concept of architectural drawing, which is traditionally used to describe a building, and given it the shape of an object in a three-dimensional space — creating an artifact that is both representational, abstract, tactile, and tectonic. “Parallax Gap” recalls the Renaissance-era trompe l’oeil ceilings, which use the “illusory depth of perspective to explore beyond the existing architecture.” The installation leaves the viewer with a visual puzzle, opening up the space of illusion for creative interpretation.Led by David Freeland and Brenna Buck, FreelandBuck is known for its visually rich and intricate designs. The firm was the winner of the 2017 AIA LA Next LA Award, and a finalist for the 2018 MoMA PS1 Young Architect’s Program. The installation is on view through February 11, 2018, at The Renwick Gallery, 1661 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20006, USA.For more information, visit: http://www.freelandbuck.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the installation.
