The Harbin Opera House in the landscape along Songhua River built by the MAD Architects is one of the finest examples of modern architecture. Beijing’s MAD group had won the competition in 2010 that was organised to identify the architectural group that could take on the challenging job of transforming the island and making it a centre of attraction. The 850,349-square-foot opera house has been built perfectly across 444 acres of land. The curvilinear external structure is built to withstand extreme rain and snowfall and it is in synchronisation with the surrounding topography.WTKR quoted Ma Yansong, the founder and principal of MAD Architects that the project was undertaken by the group with the idea of integrating the emotional and natural appeal with the latest architectural innovation. The grand theater in the Opera House has a capacity of 1600 while the smaller theatre caters to 400 visitors. Manchurian Ash wood has been used to carve out the grand theater while the smaller auditorium is set against a panoramic view of the world outside. The spiral staircase allows visitors and audiences to climb up and have a breathtaking view of the surrounding areas. The idea of integrating architecture with nature is surely a thing of the future and Harbin Opera House will act as an example to many in the future.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek into the theater.
