Kavanaugh declares war on the nation's women

Campaign Action Brett Kavanaugh, taking a page from the pussy-grabber in chief, is doubling down and refusing to withdraw his nomination. Taking his talking points from Senate Republicans—and in the process dismissing any lingering questions that anyone might have about his commitment to blind justice, he calls the allegations against him a partisan smear. Then goes on to insist «a federal judge must be independent, not swayed by public or political pressure.» And that «that is the kind of judge I will always be.» Pure and utter horseshit. «These are smears, pure and simple,» he writes to Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Pure and utter horseshit, as his testimony and repeated perjuries before that committee three weeks ago attest. He even lies about that in this letter, saying «I sat before the Senate Judiciary Committee for more than 31 hours and answered questions under oath.» He didn't even answer what he thought about Trump's desire to authorize torture that is «worse than waterboarding.» The whinefest that is this letter is simply nauseating. The allegations, he says «are a threat to any man or woman who wishes to serve our country.» It's «grotesque and obvious character assassination.» He will «not be intimidated» by the «coordinated effort to destroy my good name,» nor will the «vile threats of violence against my family.» Then he actually writes that he has «devoted my career to serving the public and the cause of justice, and particularly to promoting the equality and dignity of women.» If this were all true, if Kavanaugh really wanted to prove his sterling character, he would do the one thing that would prove it. He'd ask for an independent investigation from the FBI. Period.

Kavanaugh's female accusers have uniformly been described as not politically motivated truth tellers

One of the most striking differences between Brett Kavanaugh and his accusers is how they have been universally described as credible and even gentle people who have not been motivated by politics to tell their stories. Here's how Stanley Garnett, the Colorado lawyer currently representing Kavanaugh's latest accuser, described Deborah Ramirez, who attended Yale University with Kavanaugh in the early-to-mid '80s. “She’s as careful and credible a witness as I’ve encountered in thirty-six years of practicing law.”  That's what Garnett told the New Yorker, which first published her account of Kavanaugh exposing himself to her during one alcohol-infused night in their freshman year. Even the Yale classmates who still backed Kavanaugh in the New Yorker piece stopped short of tagging Ramirez as politically motivated. «I actually interviewed some of the people who have come out in support of Kavanaugh from the class publicly and said, Do you think she's politically motivated?» Jane Mayer, who co-authored the piece with Ronan Farrow, told NPR. «And they declined to say she was. They're the people who know both these people and they're saying, actually, No, we really don't see any reason to believe she's politically motivated.” Ramirez has openly admitted there's significant gaps in her story due to the fog of intoxication, but Mayer credited her with being as transparent as possible about the incident. »She's been remarkably, I think, forthcoming about what she does know, what she does remember, what she doesn't,« Mayer said Monday morning, adding that the most telling mark of her candor is that she's calling for an FBI investigation into the incident. That one fact unites her allegation with that of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, a research psychologist, who has accused Kavanaugh of pinning her to a bed and assaulting her when the two were in high school in the early ‘80s. Ford, like Ramirez, has been described by everyone who knows her as meticulous, precise, and measured in both nature and profession. »Her expertise is statistics,« her sister-in-law, Sandra Ford Mendler, told MSNBC Friday. »She's very careful about information and never exaggerating results."

Kavanaugh accuser speaks: 'I have one motivation in coming forward—to tell the truth'

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford sent a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to explain how and why she decided to come forward with her accusation that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted when she was 15 years old (and Kavanaugh was 17 years old). In the letter dated September 22, 2018 (seen below), Ford says she first came forward when she learned that Brett Kavanaugh was on a short list of people being considered to replace retiring Justice Kennedy and that she wanted to avoid public embarrassment for everyone involved by coming forward before he was even named as the nominee. Dr. Ford said she had only one motivation in coming forward: “to tell the truth about what Mr. Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge did to me.”  Here is Dr. Ford’s powerful letter in its entirety.

While accuser avoids limelight, Kavanaugh schedules softball Fox interview

Embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his wife, Ashley ,will appear on Fox News Monday night to defend him against sexual assault allegations. Kavanaugh will address the two allegations of sexual misconduct that have been leveled against him, as well as his upcoming Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday “and the effect these claims have had on his family,” per the network’s statement. This is a significant departure from precedent—Supreme Court nominees don’t usually do interviews—and again shows how much unexpected trouble Kavanaugh’s nomination is in. By contrast, Kavanaugh’s first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, wrote in her letter to Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley that “I have received an inordinate number of requests to appear on major TV shows to elucidate further information, to which I have not responded.” It’s almost like one of them is interested in the truth and the other is trying to spin the truth to look good.

Republicans double down on Kavanaugh to keep Ford from testifying, but it isn't working

Campaign Action Republicans—the leadership anyway—are united with the pussy-grabber in chief and his odious Supreme Court nominee in insisting they will not back down and withdraw Brett Kavanaugh's nomination. They are doing it for one reason, to try to keep Dr. Christine Blasey Ford from testifying. Leadership is getting their message out everywhere they can, including The New York Times. «Senior Republicans are closing ranks around the nominee, and they echoed Judge Kavanaugh’s claims, accusing Democrats of running 'a smear campaign' to derail his confirmation,» Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports. Notably, Sens. Murkowksi, Collins, and Flake are not featured in the story, having, apparently nothing to say at the moment. This is all bluster intended for one audience member—Christine Blasey Ford. They are signaling to her they will be as nasty as they—or whatever woman they can find willing to do their dirty work in their stead—want to be in order to keep her from testifying. That's been the strategy from the get-go, from not giving her time to prepare to refusing to even consider an FBI investigation to telling her she would have to appear with Kavanaugh to not being able to present witnesses. Republicans are painted into a corner on this and they know it. She is eminently believable and they know it. They also know Kavanaugh is a liar, and the public knows it. Kavanaugh is deeply unpopular with voters. Well guess what, assholes, it's not working. Ford writes to Grassley: «While I am frightened, please know, my fear will not hold me back from testifying and you will be provided with answers.» Your move, assholes.

Chain mail, needles, and dishwashing gloves: though not the materials you’d expect a dress to be made from, British artist Susie MacMurray uses them in her garment-inspired sculptures. MacMurray’s first piece in this body of work was Gladrags, made in 2002 from 10,000 pink balloons. Since then, the artist has produced several other seemingly wearable sculptures including Medusa (copper chain mail), Widow (leather and 100,000 dressmaker needles), and A Mixture of Frailties (1,400 household gloves). Report: Chiefs have been persistent in inquiring about Earl Thomas

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the best offensive team in the NFL through the first three weeks of the season, and they are apparently determined to get better on the other side of the ball as they look to contend for a Super Bowl.ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday that the Chiefs have “emerged as a candidate” to trade for All-Pro safety Earl Thomas if the Seattle Seahawks decide to move him. It’s unclear if the Chiefs and Seahawks have had actual discussions about a deal, but Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com was told by a source that Kansas City has been persistent in inquiring.Chiefs safety Eric Berry is rehabbing from a torn Achilles he suffered in Week 1 of the 2017 season, and he is expected to resume on-field work soon. Chadiha reports that Kansas City’s interest in Thomas is not indicative of any concerns with Berry’s health, which would indicate the Chiefs are looking to pair the two star safeties together.Thomas is in the final year of his contract with the Seahawks, and they have seemed hesitant t
